About Dr. Cecil
I started my piscine career while a zookeeper,
adding the care of pond fish to my duties since they were basically
ignored as “just fish”. During veterinary school, I selected a zoological
medicine track with an emphasis in aquatic species. Externships
at many renowned aquaria led to an internship position with the
Thad Cochran Warm Water Aquaculture Center in Mississippi where
my knowledge of fish diagnostics and treatment grew exponentially.
As a private practitioner in the San Diego area for over 15 years,
I have been treating avian, exotic and piscine species exclusively.
I am involved with the Koi Club of San Diego and Tropical Fish Society,
in addition to a consultant for the Hubbs/Sea World Research Institute
and Chula Vista Nature Center. Working with individual pet fish
and aquaculture has provided me with a unique diagnostic approach,
focusing on single animals, population dynamics and habitat ecology.
I believe we, as a veterinary community, can treat our aquatic
family members with the same high level of medicine that is offered
to our canine and feline companions. Modalities such as a complete
physical examination, blood work and bacteriology are vital diagnostic
criteria and routinely performed at my practice. Specialized diagnostics
including serology, radiography, ultrasonography and endoscopy can
be arranged to better care for you aquatic family member.
